Church Without Walls loves Berkeley: city, people, cultures, state of mind.
In the Old Testament book of Jeremiah, God tells his people “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce…. Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you…. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”
We’ve taken these words to heart and have invested our lives and hearts in Berkeley. We’ve rented apartments and purchased homes, enrolled our children in Berkeley schools and joined community action groups. We pick up trash, tutor kids, take prayer walks, run neighborhood movie nights and fix houses, not because we’re do good-ers, but because we love our community, with all its charms and foibles, and its welfare is our good.
But we can’t do this on our own.
We rely on the encouragement and friendship found in small groups, the heart of church life. In small group, members deepen their relationship with God and one another through Bible study, prayer, honest conversation and (more often than not) good food. Small group communities care for one another in the grit and grind of life—a new job, a broken relationship, questions of faith—and spur one another on toward increased love for God and neighbor.
